T h e G O S P E L M E R I T S • "To You With Love"
The Gospel Merits started out with only three members in the group, Coy Evans, Irene Evans and Fermon Southerland. Two weeks after the group started Irene decided to pursue other things while giving her husband Coy all the moral support he needed to carry on with the group.
Coy and Fermon then asked Sonny Caldwell to join the group as a baritone singer and play rhythm guitar. Sonny wrote the majority of the songs that The Gospel Merits then were singing.
As time went on Fermon decided to pursue other interests and left the group. At that time Robert Evans, who is Coy's son, then joined the group as the tenor singer and bass player.
The Gospel Merits traveled a lot of roads for 14 years singing for the Lord. Sonny's health then started getting bad to the point he could no longer travel with the group. It was at that time that The Gospel Merits made the difficult decision to disband the group.
Sonny Caldwell passed away in 2011.Fermon Southerland and Miss Irene passed away in 2012.
Note: Something Coy left out in this short bio of the group that I would like to add. I know and knew the members of the Gospel Merits. Dedication to the Lord and to His service far outshine the talent of this Christian group. They have been a great blessing to many people through their ministry and thanks to Bro. Larry Wade and the Precious Memories web site. I am sure they will be a blessing to countless others in the years to come. ~Bill Fields
